Brief
SNOMED International is a not-for-profit organisation that owns and develops SNOMED CT, the world's most comprehensive healthcare terminology product. This enables healthcare information to be exchanged globally for the benefit of patients and other stakeholders.
Nucleus has worked for SNOMED International since 2014 on a variety of projects, including a change of brand name – moving away from the organisation’s trading name (IHTSDO: The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization).
Following the successful brand relaunch, we were asked to conduct a complete redesign of SNOMED International’s website.
Solution
For a marketing-led website and public face of the organisation, the look and feel had become outdated. The user interface was poor: complex navigation; content written in an overly academic style; and a search tool that failed to return accurate results. Consequently, many users were unable to locate relevant content, quickly dropping off the site. SNOMED International urgently needed to re-engage with its stakeholders.
Nucleus designed and built the site to meet all the client’s aspirations for an attractive, responsive, mobile-friendly website. We created a contemporary user experience, employing a simplified layout, a strong colour palette and imagery used as focal points. We assisted in the writing and editing of key content, employing a more accessible tone of voice, and using layout features such as accordions – allowing users to explore deeper content, without the page becoming difficult to consume.
The information architecture is highly relevant to each stakeholder type, with well-defined user journeys and destinations points. Calls to action on each page offer suggestions for content, news and support – including a help centre.
Results
The website was launched in October 2018, in time for the annual SNOMED CT Expo – a global event based around SNOMED International services and products.
A comprehensive Kentico CMS platform is aligned with site structure, creating a flexible and scalable technology framework for further development. We developed an effective new search tool, with features such as auto-suggestion and advanced search filters.
The website assists SNOMED International in establishing deeper interactions with online users, and in becoming more proactive in determining the future needs of its widening community. The organisation’s products and services – such as education – are now being enabled as valuable online resources for the organisation.
Nucleus hosts the site and supports its maintenance.
