This latest survey shows mobile web browsing growth running at over 100% year-on-year to an average 20.5% of all website traffic monitored in the survey of 10 leading travel websites during June 2012. The rate of mobile web browsing growth has, however, slowed since January, down from 72% in the previous 6 months, to a more sustainable 17.8%. We think this is a pregnant pause in the birth of the Mobile era and expect events like the Olympics, where smartphone and tablet users accessed streaming website video in their petabytes, the upcoming launch of the iPhone 5, and more mobile-friendly website designs, will together create another growth spurt to safely deliver the birth of the Mobile era.
Other highlights of the survey include: Apple devices continue to lead website browsing, with iOS devices maintaining an 85% of all web browsing; Android remains static at 8%; luxury websites have the highest mobile penetration, with 30%+ penetration expected by year-end 2012.
