Branding the world leader in geo-data

A digital brand brings the digital twin concept to life

Brief

Fugro is the world’s leading geo-data specialist, collecting and analysing comprehensive information about the Earth and the structures built upon it.

In 2022 Fugro asked Nucleus to create a new brand name and define a clear value proposition for its innovative geo-data engagement platform, which brings together geospatial data from public and private sources to form a 3d ‘digital twin’ of any construction project in the built world.

Two years on, with the brand name now protected with trade marks around the globe, our next brief was to bring the name to life as an individual brand within the Fugro brand architecture, which could exist without Fugro endorsement when resold through partners or subscribed to by competitors.

Solution

We explored many typographic solutions, with variations of capitals, upper and lower case and capitalised prefix and suffix, settling on a crisp, contemporary sans serif font which flowed with the name’s Vir-geo syntax.

As a digital brand that would exist primarily on the platform dashboard and websites, we considered animation as a core element of the brand, bringing a kinetic quality to the essence of the identity. This was emphasised with a colour transition, graduating from electric blue to electric green.

Once the brand mark - or logotype - was designed, we wanted to extend the digital twin concept with a supporting digital ‘ident’ which includes a Virgeo World created from raw data, which coalesces into a spinning geodesic wireframe globe as a metaphor for the digital twin of the built world.

Results

The Virgeo brand was launched on Fugro’s website in September 2024 and has been warmly received internally as the product to unlock the power of geo-data, transforming raw data into actionable insights.

The success of these two Virgeo projects has led to Fugro commissioning other projects with us, which will be unveiled over the coming year.
